The company is founded under the name of
Claes & Flentje OHG. It produces sewing
machines, knitting machines and bicycles.

   
1900 The company has approximately 1,000
employees.
   
1933 The company changes its registered trade name
to Claes & CO. KG. It keeps turning out sewing
and knitting machines right up to the end of the
Second World War.
   
1945 The company resumes the production of sewing
and knitting machines with a workforce of about
60 people.
   
1972 The company is nationalized under the name of VEB Spezialnähmaschinen Werk Mühlhausen with approx. 200 employees and becomes part of Kombinat Textima. It manufactures heavy-duty leather sewing gear and linking machines.
   
01.01.1991 The company is nationalized under the name of VEB Spezialnähmaschinen Werk Mühlhausen with approx. 200 employees and becomes part of Kombinat Textima. It manufactures heavy-duty leather sewing gear and linking machines.
   
Dec. 1994 Claes GmbH ceases business.
   
20.12.1994 CL Maschinenbau GmbH is set up. Parts of the production range and manufacturing equipment are taken over from Claes GmbH. The company produces sewing machines for shoe-repairing applications, linking machines, as well as parts and components for individual customers based on job contracts.
   
1995 The company moves from Mühlhausen to a modern building at Weinbergen, OT Grabe, Im Birntal, in the vicinity of Mühlhausen.
   
as of 2000 The company has 35 employees and eight apprentices.
Its main products are:
- Assemblies and components for warehousing equipment
- Assemblies for compressed-air engineering
- Sewing machines for shoe-repairing applications
- Linking machines
- Parts and components used in general engineering
